A Message From David Merchant

As I envision the future of the Sumter community, I am aware that many people have come before me to make Sumter a unique and special place.  Sumter has grown exponentially over the years.  As Mayor, I want to make sure that our future progress has a positive impact on our entire community.  Just this past August, Sumter was recognized as one of the top twenty cities in the country by the National League of Cities.  We have all the resources, infrastructure, and incredible citizens to make Sumter awesome. “Team Sumter” is on the brink of greatness – you are a part of that team!

Twenty-two years ago, I moved to Sumter when I married Laurie Noonan, the youngest daughter of Bill and Sandy Andrews Noonan.  We purposely planted our business in Sumter and now we are the proud parents of four children: Hannah 17, Pate 14, Sam 11, and Connor 8.  Laurie and I are involved in the community through our church, coaching youth sports, volunteering in the Sumter school district, and giving back to the community through our business.

Eight years ago, I ran for city council because I believed I could contribute to the betterment of our city.  It has been a wonderful eight years.  My community involvement and business experience has given me the opportunity to work with a wide variety of people from all different backgrounds and life experiences.  I have the knowledge of our local government and the business skills necessary to take Sumter to a new level of accomplishment.

In conclusion, we need to pinpoint inequalities in our community and come together to make a difference.  Being mayor is not about one person. It’s about a proven leader, who builds up other leaders, to make Sumter a hometown we can all be proud of.  We all have a place at the table.  What talents do you have that our community needs?  How can you make a difference in your sphere of influence?

Our city needs you, and with your vote of confidence in me, I promise to lead the charge with integrity, honesty, and transparency.

Thanks for your support!
